What We Do

Gary Steel - Accommodation Supervisor

Gary Steel
Gary Steel joined Landmarc as an Accommodation Supervisor having been made redundant from his previous job as Operations Engineer at an IT firm. Managing the provision of camp accommodation for visiting troops and responsible for a team of four General Hands, it is a job he has enjoyed for 3 years.

“I wanted a job that would utilise my people skills, give me responsibility and be different from the norm. Landmarc has given me all of that and more.

The purpose of our work is truly unique. It brings a level of personal satisfaction that I think it would be difficult to replicate elsewhere. Everyday the media brings news of the war in Afghanistan and at Landmarc we take pride in knowing that every single soldier on a plane to Afghanistan has been directly impacted by the work that we do – that really puts our customer service role into context. It’s the security of our country in its truest sense.

Landmarc has given me more opportunities than any other company to take myself forward and learn more. I have been on numerous courses. In particular I have found Landmarc’s First-in-Line course an amazing learning package. It helps people build on their strengths and what you take from it can be applied in any situation. IOSH Managing safely has given me a very good understanding of what my responsibilities are in the real world and I feel I can take that anywhere.

Being invited to be part of the Trainers Network has provided a unique opportunity to go from the trainee to the trainer, learn new skills and meet people from other parts of the organisation. Every time I assist in delivering the course, I learn something new. I feel I have been put in a very privileged position where I have been able to jump on board and learn a lot - Landmarc make it easy to do that.

Landmarc is a great company to work for. It has a very team-orientated culture, there is great camaraderie and everyone works to the same goal. To anybody looking to join I would say ‘go for it’ and advise not to be put off if you think you might lack experience – the company will support you and give you every opportunity to learn, express yourself and expand your skills.

My military background has helped me understand the client’s requirements, but it is not essential. When I joined I found the existing staff really willing and helpful and their level of local and historical knowledge was invaluable – it gave me everything I needed to know.

I would describe Landmarc in three words by saying: progressive, listening, proactive”.
