DTE East: Access
There is a presumption in favour of public access to the Defence Training Estates, on Public Rights of Way. This has to be balanced against the over-riding national requirement for safe and sustainable military training and conservation. The first priorities are military training and public safety, followed closely by archaeology, conservation and agriculture. This is in use 350 days each year, which restricts public access to the area. However, there are organised coach tours during the summer months. There is also a footpath along the Watton Brook from Great Cressingham to Bodney.
At the RAF Holbeach range, visitors are welcome but must obey the range warning signs. This has been an active range for over 100 years - so if you find anything suspicious, please don’t take it home!
East Anglia training area
Whitwell Way, a Neolithic footpath, traverses the northern boundary of Barton Road Rifle Range.
Salthouse and Kelling Heath are two small, privately owned areas on the North Norfork coast. They are crossed by several public roads and are frequently used by local people walking their dogs.
