DTE East: About our ranges
DTE East consists of three main sites:
Stanford training area
This covers 12,150 hectares and includes heathland, deciduous hardwoods, pine forests, lakes, marshes, a river and several streams. 5,150 hectares (12,700 acres) is designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. Due to restricted public activity, there are many rare species of flora and fauna including otters, bats and the rare stone curlew.
East Anglia training area
This has a mixture of ancient woodlands, scrub, heath, fen and a large area of grassland. It is home to nearly 70 species of nesting birds and over 1,000 moths and butterflies.
The East Midlands training area
This includes a large area of grass, much of it in the floodplain. Some of the river banks have very large badger sets. The woodlands have some ancient oaks and provide nesting and hunting for little owls and barn owls. Local ponds support great crested newts and 15 species of dragonfly.
