DTE Scotland: Access

There is a presumption in favour of public access to the Defence Training Estate, on Public Rights of Way. This has to be balanced against the over-riding national requirement for safe and sustainable military training and conservation.

Access is permitted to many areas but not when flags or red lights are displayed. There may be unexploded ordnance on the surface and these must not be touched.

Barry Buddon training centre
Access is restricted to the metalled roads – and the beaches when there are no flags or red lights.

Castlelaw training area
There is access along a bridle path. Other bridleways and paths are on the map at the entrances to the area.

Cultybraggan and Tighnablair
With the permission of the Drummond Estates, the public may enjoy hill walking on the area when no live firing is taking place.

Inverness training area
A large part of the beach is within the danger area of the ranges.

Kirkcudbright Training Area
A coastal path can be used when the access barriers are unlocked.

Cape Wrath training centre
Access is via the ferry from the east or a coastal footpath from the west, both of which end at the lighthouse.
