Sanctuary Success

Landmarc has been awarded Runner Up in the Sustainable Projects category of the MOD’s 2010 Sanctuary Awards.

The award is presented for the new woodland management scheme on the Otterburn Training Area in Northumberland. The Otterburn estate uses more than 10,000 items of fencing posts, stakes and rails along with 80 tonnes of woodchip each year. This material was traditionally bought from local merchants. However, Landmarc’s new woodland management scheme uses woodland thinnings to produce all the timber products required to maintain the estate’s 30km of fencing in a sustainable, in-house operation.

The project has also reduced costs, improved the military training value of the woodland and aided conservation by creating ideal habitat for species such as Black Grouse.

A representative of the Sanctuary Award Board commented on the project: “It is an excellent example of sustainable development. The award recognises the way that the team has reduced the carbon footprint of the establishment and notes that it is already a model for similar establishments with sustainable timber resources”.
