Alternative Income Generation
The MoD’s Defence Training Estate (DTE) covers 220,000 hectares of wide open landscapes, woodlands, coastline, water features, winding roads, mock villages, ancient monuments, military buildings, and tranquil settings across England, Scotland and Wales.
Not every part of the Estate is required every day for military training purposes and whilst military training always takes precedent, diversification into third party activity creates additional revenue from irreducible spare capacity which may otherwise go unused.
Landmarc manages all alternative income generating opportunities for the DTE which include:
- Filming
- Motorsports
- Commercial lettings
- Rambling and hiking associations
- Hobby clubs
For organisers of such activities, Landmarc provides a single point of contact liaising with the MoD to arrange approvals and clearances as necessary and administrating associated logistics including accommodation, storage and parking.
Landmarc’s third party activity helps to support the MoD’s Wider Markets initiative, designed not only to create additional revenue but to help keep the Armed Forces in the public eye. It promotes the standard of care provided to our soldiers by demonstrating excellence in facilities, allows public access and recreation and supports local communities by facilitating local events, hobbies and activities.
Filming
The DTE provides ideal locations for filming the latest blockbuster, a TV series or documentary and because of this over 100 separate programmes have been filmed, at least in part, on the Estate. The secrecy of remote locations which are inaccessible to the general public is enjoyed by film and TV producers. Secure sites ‘behind the wire’ prevent prying lenses of the media and open spaces are free from unsightly pylons, jet trails and modern buildings.
Past filming projects include Dr Who, Torchwood, Top Gear, D-Day: The Raw Recruit, The Farm, Bad Lads Army, Band of Brothers, Primeval, Midsomer Murders, Prime Suspect, What Not to Wear, Scrapheap Challenge, Foyle’s War, Big Nothing, The Trees That Made Britain and Britain from Above.
